Academy of Sciences

We went to the Academy of Sciences a few weeks back and really loved it! I did get pretty motion sick however from the planetarium but recovered walking through the rain forest. I took these pics from one of the 'educational' displays, they are very inspiring for some new silk designs.

Bubble Veil

I am searching for the perfect veil and I found this one from Sara Gabriel. The length I think will work well with my dress and it has a vintage, 60's look which I love. I am not crazy on the crystals however and they will need to go if this is the one I run with. I have my first fitting soon and I am very excited to see how my accessories work out!

I have been hand drawing each of my holiday cards this year. Lilly in the center with a little sweater holding our initials. Each one is slightly different and has its own charm.

I am working on some woven fabrics which I am planning to have turned into beautiful garments sometime in the new year. They will mostly be simple dresses using a combination of wools and silks. Better get cracking!

Remember, remember...........

Guy Fawkes night! The fourth year in a row I have sadly missed my parents bonfire, illegal fireworks, hot soup and the warm glow on my cheeks.... perhaps next year I'll make it home.

Wedding Favors

I have found these gorgeous books by Dover. There are about 50 different titles each with its own cover design; several of which are William Morris designs!

Pavé Pearls

I am truly in love with pearls! One of my favorite pearl stories is that Cleopatra and Mark Antony:
"Cleopatra arrived on her legendary barge, and proceeded to throw elaborate banquets for Antony and his officials for several evenings straight—nothing like a bit of wining and dining to smooth over political misunderstandings. So impressed was Antony at the lavish feasts Cleopatra had arranged that he accepted a friendly wager. Cleopatra bet Antony a large sum of money that she could host the most expensive meal in history. The next day, as the meal in question was nearing its end, Antony said that it had been terrific, but no more impressive than her other banquets—and certainly not worth the sum of money she had specified. At this, Cleopatra removed one of her pearl earrings and dropped it in a goblet of wine vinegar. Each of the pearls was so large and rare that it was extraordinarily valuable—estimates are usually expressed in extremely helpful terms such as “10,000,000 sesterces” or “100,000 gold aurei,” or “the value of 15 countries.” In any event, it was worth a fortune. The pearl dissolved in the vinegar, which Cleopatra then drank. Antony conceded defeat—the value of that single drink, let alone the banquet, had indeed been more than any meal in history"

I plan to experiment with striated tweeds and have been heavily inspired by aboriginal art. The rich colors and linear, undulating forms will translate beautifully in wool and silk.

Pican Restaurant

I had a wonderful dinner this evening accompanied by equally wonderful company! Pican serves high end southern cuisine and the vibe is a funky mix of soul and southern comfort. I particularly appreciated the red velvet chairs and large banquet style tables.
The ribs and duck were delicious and the grits and corn bread divine!

Pigeon Possible

This is the one! I ordered this today from Joe's Bike shop in Portland, Oregon. I can't wait till it arrives!! I opted for the leather saddle and dynamo light! I love the 1930's design and dare I say prefer this to my stolen Schwinn!

Royal Ascot 2009

Royal Ascot is the social event of the British racing and Royal calendar. The real spectacle is the hats on ladies day, the more outrageous the better! Something must be said for the men too however, bowler and top hats from times past re emerge in polished splendor.

Wedding Dress Ideas

My two darling sisters from Scotland are visiting me in July and I am very excited to see them! I am planning to make a couple of appointments with some wedding dress designers in San Francisco. I am drawn to several different dresses, each posses their own pros and cons. Dancing is a must as we are having a traditional Ceilidh but I also want something fairly dramatic as the wedding is in a castle! This one is in the Vineyard Collection from Priscilla of Boston.

Shape of things to Come

I've been feeling round glasses for around a year now but have struggled to discover a designer making them. It appears this round lens trend is now hitting the main steam fashion circuit. I discovered these by Karen Walker, which I love but I may seek out thinner frames, more Lennon esque.....
